Needing to test the bike rack out on the Atlas, we decided to do a short trip to VA Beach KOA. Originally scheduled for the end of April, my spring cold and cough caused us to delay it for two weeks.
Leaving at noon, I read Ron my latest book, Living Divinely on the way, beginning the editing process. From experienced writers, I learned reading your work out loud helps edit, and I’ve found their advice true.
“It’s an arrow,” I said to Ron when we walked the dogs in the kickball field. At the time, we didn’t know about the tournament, but the next day when play began, the white lines painted on the field made much more sense.
Before we settled in for an afternoon of kickball, Ron took me to Hobby Lobby where I loaded up on craft supplies for the shop. Then we made noon appointments for pedicures and had a light lunch at Bro’s Fish Tacos.
Site 110 gave us front-row seats to Kick-A-Palooza, the ninth annual kickball tournament. Music blared from the field as teams went to battle. Adults, revisiting their childhood fought fiercely for the title.
“I love learning about different sub-cultures. I didn’t even know kickball was a thing.”
Ron and I sat and watched kickball all afternoon, mesmerized. Team after team, we watched from afar. After the games, they would walk by and we would find out who won or lost.
Hot pink shirts, “Kick, Run ,Drink” sprawled across their chest, players names on the back, dominated the field, winning their game easily. As the day progressed, the accuracy got worse, alcohol and pot the culprit.
Players with blue tooth speakers walked by, Guns and Roses blaring. Some played country, others pop-rock, all having fun.
We debated riding our bikes to a brewery but decided to stay and watch kickball. After all, it’s not something you do every day.
My favorite part: after the game when the teams line up to slap hands. I love the camaraderie and sportsmanship, it warms my heart!
“Nineteen minutes, we gotta go.”
Unfortunately, Ron had his maps set on a bicycle and the nineteen-minute trip to Risen Church only took nine minutes. Arriving in plenty of time, we did Wordle before we went into the Water Table restaurant/Risen church.
Back from church a little before 11:00, we hooked up and headed home in time for a 1:30 tee time at the Cardinal Course. Relaxing and restful weekend for sure!
